It is estimated that at least 100,000 Syrians are missing, from earlier atrocities committed in Syria and from the current conflict. People are missing as a consequence of summary executions, arbitrary and incommunicado detention, kidnapping and abduction, enslavement, sarin gas attacks and other human rights abuses. The fighting and day-to-day ravages of war have also left combatants and civilians of many nationalities missing. In addition, migrants fleeing the region are missing, including children who have been separated from their families, migrants who have died trying to cross the Mediterranean, and human trafficking victims.
