13 March 2013: A press conference was held today in Sarajevo to announce a new donation from Microsoft to the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP). The commercial value of Microsoft’s software donation is 480,000 USD, and includes Windows, Office, Windows Server, Exchange Server, SQL Server, Visual Studio and Lync.

The software will enable ICMP to improve its operational systems and to continue its vital work in assisting governments to address the issue of missing persons, including the provision of DNA analysis to assist in the identification of persons missing from armed conflict, human rights abuses, disasters, or other causes.

ICMP Director General Kathryne Bomberger said on this occasion: “ICMP’s global work in assisting countries to address large scale missing persons problems requires a trusted information technologies partner with global influence, and we could hardly have a better partner in this regard than Microsoft Corporation. Microsoft’s software enables ICMP to communicate quickly and reliably with stakeholders around the world, which is critical to our work”.

“This donation is a marked example of how software and modern technology can help in resolving issues that are relevant to society, in this case the issue of missing persons. I hope our software will enable ICMP to carry out their work in an even more efficient and productive manner. We also hope that our product Lync Server will be of particular use to ICMP as it offers an integrated solution for audio-video conference calls, multiuser meetings, and instant messaging, which will definitely facilitate everyday communication between ICMP’s distant offices, and make significant savings”, said Lejla Zukić-Krivdić, Microsoft BiH Director, adding that in addition to Lync the donation includes Windows, Office, Exchange Server, Visual Studio and SQL Server.

As part of its global project “Unlimited Potential,” Microsoft has supported non-profit organizations in Bosnia and Herzegovina for years. The donation to ICMP helps to reveal the truth about persons who went missing during armed conflicts, as a result of violations of human rights and during natural disasters, a truly global issue. ICMP is the only international organization that addresses the issue of missing persons in a systematic manner and that is why it is important for Microsoft as a socially responsible company to give its share in resolving this extremely significant issue.

ICMP has engaged in resolving the issue of persons missing in wars, human rights violations and natural disasters in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia, Kosovo, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Colombia, Chile, the Philippines, Thailand, the Maldives, Norway, South Africa, the United States and Cyprus. ICMP has helped in the scientific identification of 17,000 missing persons in the Western Balkans, 14,100 in Bosnia and Herzegovina alone. ICMP has offices in the Western Balkans, Iraq and Libya.
