US-Mexico Border: challenges in identifying missing migrants

The Center for Investigative Reporting has published an in-depth analysis of efforts to account for missing migrants who have attempted to cross the US-Mexico border. Bosnia and Herzegovina: commemoration of 1992 massacre

Survivors and victims’ families have commemorated 224 Bosniak and Croat prisoners of war who were killed in August 1992 at the Koricani cliffs on Mount Vlasic in Central Bosnia, N1 reports. Eleven people were sentenced to a total of 200 years in prison for the massacre. The remains of 80 of the victims have not yet been found. http://bit.ly/2o157m3

HRW urges UN to convene special session on Nicaragua

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has written to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) with the support of 54 regional NGOs calling on the UNHRC to convene a special session on the deteriorating human rights crisis in Nicaragua. Among other things, the HRW urges the UNHRC to address the issue of enforced disappearances in Nicaragua. https://bit.ly/2OWi5Nl

Turkey: Fate of the 1990s missing still unknown

The Turkish Human Rights Association (iHD) has stated that the fate of 264 of 472 victims of enforced disappearance in the 1990s cannot be determined, the Stockholm Center for Freedom reports, noting that resolving cases is complicated by restrictions arising from Turkey’s statute of limitations. https://bit.ly/2OZv80s

Death of founder of Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo

María Isabel Chorobik de Mariani, who spearheaded the campaign to account for those who went missing during the 1970s dictatorship in Argentina, has died. The New York Times reports that Mariani died at the age of 94 from respiratory complications as a result of an earlier stroke. The President of Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo led the search for hundreds of babies stolen from their parents under the dictatorship, including Mariani’s own granddaughter, who has never been found. https://nyti.ms/2LrT1fa
