Mark Freeman is the Executive Director of the Institute for Integrated Transitions (IFIT). A Canadian and Belgian citizen, he is a leading global expert on conflict resolution and human rights. Before founding IFIT, Freeman served as Chief of External Relations at the International Crisis Group. Prior to that, he helped launch and direct the International Center for Transitional Justice, in New York and Brussels.
He is the author of several leading texts in the field, including Necessary Evils: Amnesties and the Search for Justice (Cambridge UP, 2010); Truth Commissions and Procedural Fairness (Cambridge UP, 2006); and most recently Negotiating Transitional Justice (Cambridge UP, 2020), which draws on the years he worked as an expert adviser inside the Havana-based peace talks between the Colombian government and the FARC-EP.
