Dr. Hisham Al-Alawi has served as the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to the Kingdom of Netherlands since February 2018, and as Iraq’s Permanent Representative to the OPCW since March 2018. As Ambassador in The Hague, he has worked to enhance cooperation between ICMP and the relevant Iraqi Ministries’ and Institutions.
Dr. Al-Alawi served as Iraq’s ambassador to Turkey, from 2016 to 2018, and to South Africa, from 2011 to 2015. He graduated from the College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad in June 1988 and received a Diploma of Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in the United Kingdom in 1994. He completed his specialist medical training in the UK in May 2001. From 2002 to 2010 he worked as a Consultant Physician with interest in Diabetes & Endocrinology in Birmingham. He was awarded a Doctorate in Internal Medicine in 2010 by the Iraqi Higher Commission for Medical Specializations.
After receiving a Post-Graduate Diploma in Diplomatic Studies from the University of Westminster in 2009, Dr. Al-Alawi joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Baghdad with the rank of Ambassador, initially serving as Head of the Policy Planning Department.
