Court rules that Egyptian police must disclose information on missing persons

Ahram Online, an Egyptian news portal, reported on Monday that the country’s High Administrative Court has ruled that the Ministry of the interior must disclose the location of citizens reported as missing persons. The court ruled that the ministry must “investigate and reveal the whereabouts of any citizen, alive or dead, in missing persons cases”.

Syria: calls release of detainees in all enforced-disappearance cases

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) on Monday published details of a new report that documents the arbitrary arrest of 589 individuals in June 2017, and 3,157 in the first half of 2017. The SNHR says it possesses information on 117,000 detention cases, most of them believed to be at the hands of the Syrian regime. Bodies from mass graves not adequately protected in Syria

The Syria Justice and Accountability Centre reported on Friday that satellite imagery and other documentation has indicated that the Syrian government and ISIS have used mass graves and burn sites to dispose of bodies, making identification of victims increasingly difficult. The conflict in Syria is hampering proper preservation and forensic DNA analysis of mass graves. The International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) has reported that approximately 60,000 persons are missing from the Syrian conflict. ICMP Director-General Kathryne Bomberger has stated that the destruction of evidence can make it more difficult to prosecute perpetrators in court and that “proper crime scene investigation can open the door for accountability,” the online source said.
